Done similar to this by the master himself on his 2001-02 acoustic series of concerts. That's where I got it from obviously :P

In my case I split the signal with a Gigrig humdinger and had one direct line to the audio interface, which was used for the solo, the other line ran through a volume pedal into a TC Electronic Flashback 2 set in Mod Mode with subdivision quarter and dotted 8th notes.
Every time I strummed a chord I engaged the volume pedal to let the signal travel through this line to create that swell/sustain effect sounding a bit like a synthesizer.
