The decision was made three weeks before Parliament is set to convene to determine his legitimacy to govern, amid a raging pandemic, economic downturn and mounting pressures from the opposition and the biggest bloc within the ruling coalition, UMNO. His decision to step down after just 17 months in office has allowed UMNO to reclaim the premiership 3 years after it lost the 2018 general election.

UMNO veteran, Mr Ismail Sabri Yacob has emerged as Malaysia’s 9th Prime Minister. He will be tasked to overcome the public health emergency as a result of the record breaking COVID-19 infections, heal the political divide and nurse the economy back to health.
