The infancy narratives in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, and the Prologue in John’s gospel function like an orchestral overture. They sound notes that will resonate throughout the gospel. Although popular piety tends to blend the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke, they are two quite different accounts of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. Both infancy narratives are subversive; they subverted the dominant consciousness of the first century world.
