12 missile tests in 45 days: Is India in overdrive mode?

The recent burst of tests began on September 7 when India tested the hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle or HSTDV. This is not an actual missile but a very crucial technology demonstrator that will help in developing missiles that can travel at a speed of Mach 6 or six times the speed of sound. India is only the fourth nation after US, China and Russia to successfully test this system. The hypersonic technology will be the key to defeating missile defence systems of the future as these leave very less time for the defence systems to kick in. Another important test was the SMART torpedo system or the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo system that was tested on October 5.
