Quick 2 min Bike Drivetrain Cleaning & Lubrication: chain, cassette cogs, & more cycling
Bike cycling cleaning tips: How to preform a quick 2 min cleanup of your chain drivetrain and components including chain, cassette, and chainrings for quick maintenance. Lubing your chain at regular interval will keep your bicycle components lasting longer and performing better. Obviously, if the bike is very dirty, a thorough bike wash will be needed. Otherwise, cleaning chain and lube your chain and drive train (cassette and chain rings) every 150 to 200 miles or at least weekly. If you just add more lube without cleaning your drivetrain, you'll just build up layers of lube and dirt which will decrease the life of your components and lead to poor shifting. We'll show you the best quick 2 min clean and lube to keep your cycle components in top performance.
1. Degrease to clean bike chain with an old cloth (I use an old T shirt) and a tiny bit of turpentine.
2. Use an old tooth brush or soft brash brush on the chain to remove particle caught within the chain links and wipe again
3. Using your cloth, clean chain rings, clean pully wheels and finally fold the cloth and run it between the cogs of the bike cassette to clean cassette. Don't forget to shift the chain to get at the gears under the chain. Also wipe off the derailleur. Let turpentine evaporate over a few minutes.
4. Lube the chain chain link by link. Wipe of the excess so it doesn't pick up dirt while cycling.
A mountain bike chain, mountain bike cassette and trail bikes may require cleaning more often then those of a road bike, but periodic bike maintenance including cleaning bike cassette chain and chainrings are a key to long lasting components and performance. All in only 2 minutes. Even acceptable on carbon fiber bikes.
P.s., you don't need a bike stand to perform our quick clean up. Just lean the bike against the wall and pedal backward. Pick up the bike seat to shift and turn the pedal when needed. No tools required other then degreaser and an old cloth.
We will discuss in other videos a waterless bike cleanup as well as a bike bath and quick repair on the road.
