Why the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans Don't mix

The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans do mix, but they have different properties, which can give the impression that they don't mix readily. One of the key factors is the difference in water density caused by variations in temperature and salinity.

The Atlantic Ocean tends to be saltier and denser than the Pacific Ocean due to differences in circulation patterns, evaporation rates, and freshwater inputs from rivers. While there are regions where water from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans does mix, such as the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, the distinct characteristics of each ocean basin contribute to the perception that they don't readily mix on a large scale.
