Zaryadye is one of the oldest historical districts in the center of Moscow, east of the Kremlin, in the southern part of Kitay-Gorod. The history of Zaryadye is usually counted from the 12th century. Initially, the area was called Podol, as it was located on the gentle slope of the Moskva River and lay in a lowland. At that time, river trade was booming here. The main commercial pier of the city was connected to the Kremlin by a wide paved street called Velikaya.
