Solar panel manufacturing process 😱 ☀️
😱 #2025 #solar
Solar cell manufacturing involves multiple steps, from raw material processing to assembling solar panels. Here’s a general overview of the process:
1. Raw Material Selection
- Most solar cells are made from silicon ,which is extracted from quartz or sand.
- Other materials like perovskite, CdTe (Cadmium Telluride), and CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) are also used in thin-film solar cells.
2. Silicon Ingot Formation
- Purification:Silicon is purified through the Siemens process to obtain high-purity polysilicon.
-Crystallisation:The purified silicon is melted and then solidified into ingots using either:
- Mono-crystalline Process (Czochralski Method)– Produces high-efficiency solar cells.
- Polycrystalline Process– Cheaper but slightly less efficient.
3. Wafer Cutting
- The ingots are cut into thin wafers (about 150-200 µm thick) using a wire saw.
- Wafers are then cleaned to remove impurities.
4. Doping & Diffusion Process
- A thin layer of phosphorus (n-type)is diffused onto the wafer surface to create a PN junction, which is necessary for electricity generation.
5. Anti-Reflective Coating & Surface Texturing
-Surface Texturing:To reduce light reflection and improve absorption.
- Anti-Reflective Coating (ARC):Applied to further reduce light loss.
6. Metallization & Contact Formation
- Screen Printing: Silver (for front contacts) and aluminum (for rear contacts) are printed onto the wafer.
- **Sintering:** Contacts are baked at high temperatures to improve conductivity.
7. Testing & Sorting
- Cells are tested for efficiency, voltage, and current output.
- Defective cells are discarded or recycled.
8. Solar Panel Assembly
- Interconnection:Individual solar cells are connected in series or parallel to form a solar module
- Encapsulation:Cells are sandwiched between layers of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate)and a
glass cover for protection.
-Framing:The panel is placed in an aluminium frame to improve durability.
9. Quality Control & Certification
- The final solar panels are tested under standard test conditions (STC) to ensure efficiency and durability.
- Panels are certified according to industry standards (e.g., IEC 61215, IEC 61730).
