G16E-GTS Yaris GR Engine Over Rev Blowing Engines? (Same problem as Toyota 86)

Wow, I can’t believe I’m seeing this again. Yaris GR dropping valves and blowing motors?

Toyota has decided to run this engine without a rocker retainer clip, like the FA20 engine.

During the valve float episode the rocker was dislodged of the hydraulic lash adjuster/pivot due to the lack of a rocker retainer clip forcing the valve spring retainer down and dislodging one of the valve collets out this is why I think the engine still was going ok.

The engine is a 4 valve engine so it would still run ok and have no noise but the next day the second collet broke and you have a valve kissing a piston BOOM.

In the Toyota 86 built by Subaru but appear to have the same rockers running on this engine.

I have developed a rocker retainer clip that will prevent or at least minimise this from happening again and would recommend they be fitted on this engine with some modification to the hydraulic lash adjuster.

Check out my findings on the Toyota FA20 engine. The same problem.
