Over the Hills and Far Away (instrumental)

An instrumental arrangement for mandolin and guitar of the folk song "Over the Hills and Far Away."

Though the song actually refers to 18th Century English military life, it has over the years also acquired gentler rural associations, and these are reflected in the accompanying images here: the "hills" are, variously, in Wensleydale, Nidderdale, Northumberland and on the North York Moors.

"Down to the Roots" is an ongoing personal project to present new instrumental arrangements of traditional folk songs, chiefly from the British Isles, played on a range of instruments and multi-tracked in a small home studio on a Tascam DP-03. Various selections can be found on this channel, all accompanied by sequences of appropriate (more or less!) images, and new pieces are added from time to time.
