***The bag in this video uses fabric with patterns associated with Native American tribal use. The fabric was gifted to me and was originally purchased from a large chain fabric supplier in the United States of America. All legal matters pertaining to creating fabrics using such designs should be taken up with the seller of the fabric.
I am comfortable using Native American pattern designs in the bags I make. I am a lineal descendent of a member of the Cherokee Nation being named after my fourth great grandmother, Kesiah. My use of such patterns is a recognition and celebration of that heritage.
It is recognized in academic studies of Native American cultures that decorative art on many everyday objects had no special meaning. It is also recognized that not all Native American tribes associated the same meaning to each symbol. The primary geometric pattern in this fabric is a variant of the butterfly symbol. I have found no evidence that this pattern was used exclusively for ceremonial purposes by the Cherokee Nation. If you have evidence to the contrary, please contact me privately with that information, as I do not wish to violate the sacred nature of Cherokee Nation cultural and ceremonial symbols.
