Mikhail Andreevich Berkos — Russian and Ukrainian painter of Greek origin. Worked primarily in the genre of landscape, experienced a noticeable influence of European impressionism. Worked in oils and watercolors]. In his works often turned to the subject of Ukrainian nature.
Born September 3, 1861 in Odessa. The father — the citizen of Greece Andrey Ignatievich berkos — served in the firm "will do-fender", mother — Martha Ivanovna — came from a Russian noble family. The family lived in own house on Pushkin.
Mikhail berkos was first studied painting in Odessa drawing school, from which he graduated in 1877. Then continued his education at the Imperial Academy of arts in St. Petersburg, where he studied from 1878 to 1889 in the workshop of Mikhail Klodt and Vladimir Orlovsky[1]. Received small and large silver medals (1884-1886), a small gold medal for the painting "View of one of the oldest parks of St. Petersburg" (1887), a gold medal for the painting "Landscape. Forest in the swamp" (1888). During the holidays, along with fellow artists came to Kharkiv, painted landscapes, in particular the essay "Full of poppies" (1885). In 1889 he graduated from the Academy with the title of class artist of the first degree and the right to travel abroad at public expense (pension).
From 1890 to 1893 as a pensioner of the Academy of berkos traveled to Europe, studying the art museums of France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland. Wrote a lot, and perfected the technique of painting, he was influenced by impressionism and plein air painting. After the end of the pensioner's life berkos lived for some time in St. Petersburg, presented his works at exhibitions of the society of artists.
In the second half of the 1890-ies moved to Kharkov. Lived in a suburb of Mala danylivka with the General's widow Maria Reinicke. There he wrote sketches, which were kept "Greenhouses" (1895) and "Landscape with Church" (1897). From 1904 he taught at the Kharkiv school of drawing. At the initiative of Berkos in 1912 was opened the Kharkiv art College, where until 1917 he was one of the leading teachers. A lot of effort berkos has made to the enrichment of the collection is the first in Ukraine art-industrial Museum. In the early 1900s he worked at the Kharkov literary and artistic circle. As Chairman of the Society of Kharkiv artists since 1906 he spent a great job of promoting Ukrainian art. In 1907 he participated in the design of the interiors of the house of Poltava Zemstvo in the style of Ukrainian modernism. In 1900 he exhibited at the world exhibition in Paris. In 1906 and 1908 in Kharkiv held solo exhibitions of Berkos, and in 1911, in Kiev there was an exhibition of works by Kharkiv artists of Vasilkovsky Sergei and Mikhail Berkos. Died of typhoid fever December 20, 1919 in Kharkiv.
