Truffle Farming: Why Eucalyptus Trees Are a Threat

In Australia, the biggest threat to a truffle orchard isn't a pest. It's the native trees on your boundary.
Eucalypts form ectomycorrhizal partnerships, the same kind of fungal relationship Tuber melanosporum needs. They bring competing fungi right up to the feeder roots of your oaks. Wattles, she-oaks, and most native eucalypts do the same thing.
When I set up my 2 hectare orchard in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria, there was native eucalyptus forest along one boundary. The fix was a 1 metre deep root barrier with heavy builders plastic, sealed at the base with bentonite clay. That depth passes the active feeder root zone for almost every species in Australian soil.
Combined with high soil pH at 7.5 to 8.3, the barrier keeps competing fungi out of the production zone.
Save this for the planning phase. Site context matters as much as soil chemistry.
