How Rocky Road Was Born (With a Dash of Aussie Ingenuity)
Picture this — Australia, 1853.
The gold rush is on, prospectors are swarming the goldfields, and shiploads of fancy European sweets are making the long trek Down Under... except there’s a tiny problem.
By the time these sugary delights arrived, many were about as fresh as a boot left in the sun. The chocolates were a bit dodgy, the sweets were sticky, and the nuts... well, at least they were local.
Enter a group of enterprising Aussie confectioners.
“Mate,” one of them said, eyeing the pile of spoiled sweets, “we can’t sell this stuff as it is. The toffs’ll have us run outta town!”
But rather than toss it all, they had a brilliant idea.
“Right — chop it up, chuck in some good local nuts, cover it all in chocolate, and call it… something new!”
And as they were mixing this lumpy, bumpy concoction, one bloke laughed and said:
“Looks a bit like the road out to the goldfields — full of rocks and potholes.”
“Rocky Road, it is then!” someone shouted.
And so, Rocky Road was born — the dessert that turned a confectionery disaster into an Aussie classic.
