Sevierville, TN Bear Rescue

Thanks to Sam Simon's generosity, PETA has rescued two Himalayan black bears who were illegally imported into Tennessee by the owner of Three Bears General Store, a tourist trap in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, that confines bears to decrepit concrete pits. PETA submitted a complaint to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency after learning that the bears were being confined to concrete and chain-link cages in a residential backyard. The agency investigated and charged the owner with illegally importing the bears into the state and struck a plea deal that secured the surrender of the two bears for retirement to a sanctuary and sought PETA's help rehoming the bears.

Three Bears' owner claimed that he had acquired the bears, a male and a female, in order to breed them and stated that he would take any cubs away from their mother as soon as possible after birth. Because the female bear may be pregnant, PETA arranged for the bears to be moved from Tennessee to Colorado as soon as possible so that she will have the opportunity to give birth in a cozy den. Meanwhile, PETA continues to advocate in behalf of the remaining bears at Three Bears General Store and hopes to help send them to a sanctuary as well.
