Lingyin Temple - Hangzhou - China

Fēi lái fēng (Peak Flying from Afar) and Ling Yin Temple (Soul's retreat Temple)

According to the record of Lingyin Temple, early in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD), the Indian Monk Hui Li came to Hangzhou and climbed the hill. On seeing the spot, he exclaimed, "That's the peak on the vulture's hill at Mid-Tianzhu, whence has it flown here?" Hence, the peak got the name Peak Flying from Afar. In 1681, Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty wrote the three characters "Fēi lái fēng" (Peak Flying from Afar) inscribed on the stone cliff.

Lingyin Temple was first built in 326 AD by the eminent Indian monk Hui Li. With its imposing and magnificent architectural structures, the Temple has remained one of the ten largest Zen Buddhist temples in China. The Temple consists of the Heavenly Guardian Hall, the Hall of Mahavira (Great Hero), the Hall of the Buddha of Medicine, the Hall for Five-Hundred Arhats, the Sutra Repository etc.
