HSS Adapts to Changing Consumer Needs While Navigating Global Uncertainties
HSS Adapts to Changing Consumer Needs While Navigating Global Uncertainties
HSS Holdings Berhad believes flexibility in pricing, packaging and product development will remain key to capturing opportunities in Malaysia’s bakery and snack market, even as businesses continue to navigate economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
Speaking during a press conference following the Group’s prospectus launch, Production Director Joshua Lau Ern Tien said HSS operates within the consumer sector, where bakery products remain part of everyday consumption regardless of broader economic conditions.
According to Lau, bakery and snack products are considered daily necessities for many consumers, creating a resilient demand base. However, evolving consumer preferences require companies to constantly innovate and adapt their offerings.
“To stay relevant, we need to continuously develop new packaging, new pricing strategies and new product mixes,” he said.
Lau explained that rising living costs, fluctuating commodity prices, geopolitical tensions and global economic challenges have influenced consumer spending patterns. As a result, HSS focuses on offering products across different price points to cater to varying customer needs while maintaining product accessibility.
At the same time, the Group is also expanding into premium product categories to provide consumers with a broader range of choices. This dual approach allows HSS to serve value-conscious shoppers while also addressing demand for higher-end bakery products.
Despite external uncertainties, Lau remains optimistic about the long-term outlook for Malaysia’s bakery industry. He highlighted the country’s multicultural society and year-round festive celebrations as important drivers of consumption, creating recurring demand for bakery products across multiple occasions and market segments.
“Regardless of economic conditions, people still need to eat, and Malaysia’s many festive seasons continue to create opportunities for bakery products,” he noted.
Addressing the challenges of scaling the business over the past two decades, Lau pointed out that geopolitical disruptions are not unique to the current environment. HSS has successfully navigated numerous economic cycles, industry challenges and market disruptions since its establishment more than 20 years ago.
Management added that the company’s ability to adapt through changing market conditions has been a key factor behind its growth and eventual progression towards a public listing.
As HSS prepares for its ACE Market debut, the Group remains focused on balancing affordability, innovation and product diversity while leveraging its decades of experience to navigate future challenges and capitalise on emerging consumer trends.
