He easily took out two-time Grand Slam champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the next round, and next up was the then-four-time US Open winner Pete Sampras in a battle for the championship.

Could Sampras - who due to a tough schedule had no recovery days between the semifinal and the final - find the legs to defeat the scrappy Australian and go on to win what would be his fifth US Open title?
