Giving Back: Corboy & Demetrio Co-founder Thomas A. Demetrio and Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth

When Chicago Lights Tutoring was presented the Thomas A. Demetrio Award of Excellence in 2019, student Devon Collins spoke about the impact his tutor made on his life.

"When I first came to tutoring, my tutor Miss Annie, she taught me how to read better, she taught me study habits and she showed me how to speak out for what I believed in," Devon Collins said.

That is exactly the kind of mentoring Thomas Demetrio hoped would be achieved when he created the Thomas Demetrio Award of Excellence while serving as President of the Chicago Bar Association in 1992.

In 1995, with Tom's inspiration and guidance, the CBA and its Foundation created Lawyers Lend-A-Hand, which until 2018 provided grants to local tutoring/mentoring programs and presented the Thomas Demetrio Award each year to an outstanding program.

Thomas Demetrio Award of Excellence recipients over the years have included Life Directions in 2001, PEAK Tutoring in 2012, Urban Life Skills in 2014, Minds Matter Chicago in 2015, Cluster Tutoring in 2016, the Chicago Chapter of America Needs You in 2017, and Chicago Lawndale AMACHI Mentoring in 2018.

In an effort to reach even more at-risk youth, Lawyers Lend-A-Hand launched its own tutoring program in 2016. The program serves more than 50 students from the Montessori School of Englewood, an underserved community in Chicago.

Students meet with Lend-A-Hand tutors who volunteer one night a week throughout the school year. Thank you, to Lawyers Lend-A-Hand for helping fulfill Tom's vision.
