About Florence Price & her quintet in a minor
Florence B. Price is an American classical composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887. She received her musical education at the New England Conservatory, and then remained active in Chicago. Price is the first African-American women composer whose work was performed by a major orchestra. Her music generally still carries a late 19th-century romantic style, but it is the integration of traditional folk melodies that makes her music a unique combination of late 19th century romanticism and modernistic approaches.
However, first being discovered in 2009, Price’s works have been overlooked for a long time. Over the past year, Wenxin has been dedicated to promoting work from women composers. Price is one of her favorite composers, and we feel very honored to be able to perform her Piano Quintet in a minor, composed in 1936. Worth noting, the 3rd Mvmt is inspired by a traditional African American Dance called Juba that involves patting the arms, legs, chest and cheeks.
