KONE MonoSpace® Elevator at DLF Promenade, Delhi, India. Made by INSL
Founded in 1910 in Helsinki, Finland, KONE has evolved from a machinery repair shop into a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry. A pivotal moment occurred in 1996 with the introduction of the KONE MonoSpace® machine-room-less elevator, which revolutionized industry standards for efficiency and space-saving technology.
Key Milestones in KONE's History:
1910-1920s: Founded in 1910, the company began manufacturing its own elevators in 1918.
1924: Harald Herlin acquired the company, establishing it as an independent entity.
1950s-1980s: International expansion began with a Swedish subsidiary in 1957, followed by major acquisitions in the Nordic region, Europe, and the U.S. (e.g., Armor Elevator Co. in 1981).
1994: Acquired the fourth-largest U.S. elevator company, Montgomery Elevator Company.
1996: Introduced the KONE MonoSpace®, the world's first machine-room-less elevator, utilizing the compact EcoDisc hoisting machine.
2013: Launched KONE UltraRope®, a technology enabling elevators to travel up to 1 kilometer, significantly improving energy efficiency.
Present: Headquartered in Helsinki, KONE focuses on smart building technology, green solutions, and maintenance for elevators and escalators across nearly 70 countries.
Presence in India
1984: Entered the Indian market through a joint venture, Beacon KONE, with Best & Crompton Engineering Ltd.
1992: Became a 100% subsidiary of KONE Corporation.
Manufacturing & R&D: Operates one of its largest manufacturing facilities in Sri Padur near Chennai and has a major R&D center, serving as a hub for the region.
KONE is known for driving industry innovation, particularly in energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and, more recently, digitalized "smart" vertical transportation solutions.
