In a week’s time, millions of people across Britain will head to the polls to vote in local and mayoral elections, and for the devolved parliaments in Scotland and Wales. These elections are widely understood to be a referendum on Keir Starmer’s deeply unpopular Labour government.

On Tuesday 21st April, Novara Media’s reporter Harriet Williamson spent the day in Barnsley to find out whether Labour could lose this former mining town’s council for the first time in its 50-year history – or if the prospect of Reform less attractive than current polls would suggest.

What do people in Barnsley make of the current Labour government? Why is Keir Starmer so deeply unpopular? And who - if anyone - is prepared to say on camera that they are considering voting for Reform?
