Japanese Book Binding for Beginners | 9-Hole Notebook Stitching Pattern
🆓 FREE 9-hole binding pattern + step-by-step guide: https://go.festivalofcraft.com/9-hole-pdf
Already made the 5-hole notebook? Now level up with the beautiful 9-hole binding pattern — more holes, more steps, and a stunning symmetrical stitch that's still completely beginner-friendly.
This tutorial focuses on the binding itself. For cover preparation, assembling the inner pages, and making neat holes, watch our 5-hole tutorial first: https://youtu.be/_92MMqaYgIM
In this step-by-step tutorial, Jill walks you through the complete 9-hole stitching sequence — from securing your thread and working outward from the centre hole, to creating the corner binds, building the symmetrical pattern on both sides, and finishing with a hidden knot.
Download the free pattern so you can follow the numbered diagrams at your own pace without trying to memorise every step.
What you'll learn:
- How to secure your thread before you start binding
- Why all 9 holes must line up — and how to check
- The correct thread length to cut (4.5× the spine length)
- How to work outward from hole 5 in both directions
- How to create corner binds at holes 1 and 9
- The complete 9-hole stitching sequence, step by step
- How to tie and hide the finishing knot inside hole 5
- How to score the cover so your book opens smoothly
- How to glue and close the cover for a neat finish
What you'll need:
- Washi paper, decorative paper or fabric
- Medium card for the covers
- Paper for the inner pages
- Glue stick
- Plastic children's needle
- Sashiko thread, ribbon or similar binding thread
- Bulldog clip and a small scrap of paper (to protect the book edge)
- Hole punch or needle
- Ruler or scoring tool
