UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologizes as report reveals decades-long blood scandal

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Monday addressed the House of Commons, apologizing for failures over the infected blood scandal.

Earlier today, a report led by former Supreme Court judge Brian Langstaff revealed the extent of the UK’s blood contamination scandal from the 1970s to 1990s. The Infected Blood Inquiry accused doctors, government and the NHS of letting 30,000 patients catch HIV and hepatitis mthrough contaminated blood products.

People had been exposed to "unacceptable risks", including the continued importing of blood products from high-risk donors abroad, including prisoners and drug addicts in the US who were paid to give blood.

About 3,000 have since died and more deaths will follow. Around 380 children with bleeding disorders had caught HIV after being given blood products for treatment, the report said.

It also revealed that the government along with the NHS had conspired in a coverup "to save face and to save expense".

For over three decades, victims and civil rights groups pushed for an independent investigation, but their findings were never officially acknowledged and no institution admitted fault.

Britain said on Tuesday it would start a compensation plan worth over £10 billion, with an average payment of £2.4 million for each patient affected by HIV.
