My Zen teacher, Richard Rose, used to say "you can't approach the Truth directly because you don't know what it is. If you knew what it was, you'd be there already."
Rose didn't know the word, but what he was talking about was using an Apophatic system–a system of subtraction. Remove what is untrue, and what remains is the Truth.
St. John of The Cross used a similar system, as have many successful spiritual seekers through the ages.
It's a very common-sense method, but it's highly effective!
