The Emperor Traded Half His Sons to Chaos—Then Ran Out of Time

The Vengeful Spirit had no shields when the Emperor stepped aboard because Horus had lowered them on purpose, turning his flagship into an invitation and a kill-zone at once, and the Emperor knew exactly what it was and came anyway. He did not come alone: with him were Sanguinius, Primarch of the Blood Angels, and Constantin Valdor, captain of the Adeptus Custodes, the finest warriors the Imperium could field, but Horus scattered them almost at once, not by simply defeating them in formation but by peeling them away from one another until each faced the nightmare separately. Sanguinius reached Horus first, alone in a chamber aboard the ship, and there the Great Angel fought the corrupted thing wearing his brother’s face — a being empowered by all four Chaos Gods, but still recognizably Horus Lupercal, the brother he had once loved. The fight ended with Sanguinius dead, broken before the Emperor ever entered the room. Then the Emperor faced Horus himself, and the canonical record leaves no real ambiguity about what happened next: Horus inflicted wounds on the Emperor that should have killed anything alive, while every injury the Emperor managed to land was almost instantly healed, forcing him into a defensive struggle inside the enemy’s ship, absorbing damage on a scale no other being in the setting could have survived. And somewhere in the middle of that catastrophic duel — after Sanguinius had fallen, after the Emperor had already been torn apart and forced back together by his own impossible nature — he understood the one thing he had not wanted to admit: Horus was not wounded, not conflicted, not salvageable. He was gone.
