An estimated 250,000 pilgrims and a host of world leaders and royals, including the US vice-president, JD Vance, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy; Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, and Britain’s Prince Edward, are expected to attend St Peter’s Square for the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV is formally installed as pope at a Mass in Vatican City. Around 300 officials and members of royal families from around the world are set to attend. Among them are President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mrs. Jeanette Rubio, Duke of Edinburgh Prince Edward, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Dutch Queen Maxima and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and Bosnian Prime Minister Borjana Kristo and others.
Pope Leo XIV presides over the Eucharistic Celebration for the Beginning of the Petrine Ministry of the Bishop of Rome, in St. Peter’s Square.
The Regina Caeli is included in the live broadcast, and it will be held in St. Peter’s Square after the Holy Mass for the Beginning of the Pontificate.
Pope Leo XIV – expected to greet delegations and guests in St. Peter’s Basilica at the end of the Regina Caeli.
The Chicago-born cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, was elected to succeed the late Pope Francis earlier this month after a conclave that lasted less than 26 hours.
