Canon "Check Ink" Error code 1401 / 1687 / 1485 Troubleshooting

Canon 'two cartridge' printers will occasionally show an error code, informing you that there is an issue with one or more of your cartridges. This can happen with original Canon cartridges, as seen in this video and remanufactured cartridges alike.

This is nearly always an issue with the gold contact strip on the front end of one of the cartridges. Even if your printer is showing that both cartridges are at fault, it is more than likely that just one is causing the issue - as shown in this video.

From time to time the gold contact strip on the front of these cartridges may have spots of ink, dirt of debris over the contacts that will prevent the printer from reading the cartridge correctly, thus giving you an error message.

This is simply resolved by gently wiping the contact strip with a clean, dry piece of kitchen towel or tissue. Reinserting the cartridge, checking to see if this resolves the issue. If this has not resolved the problem, the other cartridge is likely to be at fault, so repeat the process with the other cartridge.

If after following this troubleshooting method your printer still gives you an error code, it is possible that the contact strip on one of your cartridges has perished, making it impossible for the printer to read. This cartridge will have to be replaced.
