You can read more about Reuben’s life experiences leading up to his great sin in Genesis 34-35, this is some of what he went through that led to his choice which resulted in the loss of his inheritance and his father calling him “unstable waters” in Genesis 49:3-4. There’s much to learn from Reuben, we are reminded that getting wrapped up in our emotions and losing sight of our future can be critical, a small moment of looking for emotional relief can have serious consequences. We will see this issue again next month in Av, as the Israelites have a critical choice to make on whether they will choose faith and enter the promised land, or be deterred by fear of giants.
