Our Beautiful, Beloved Struggle: A Conversation with Dr. Anthony Monteiro, Episode 1

We present "Our Beautiful, Beloved Struggle: A Conversation with Dr. Anthony Monteiro," an interview series featuring the Du Boisian scholar, revolutionary and founder of The Saturday Free School.

Born and raised in North Philadelphia, Dr. Monteiro is a native son of the city's Black proletariat. He has spent his life being committed to the struggle for freedom and has participated in world movements for peace and national liberation. His life is a representation of the potential of Black civilization. It is the narrative of an entire people, their hopes, their desires, their language and their music. In this series, we explore Dr. Monteiro's life as an investigation into the consciousness of the Black proletariat.

Dr. Monteiro has made indispensable contributions to the battle of ideas today, especially the rediscovery of W.E.B. Du Bois as the central thinker of our times whose legacy guides humanity's search for true people's democracy. This rediscovery is best understood in the context of Dr. Monteiro's own journey through ideas of Black liberation, the Communist Party, anti-colonial and anti-apartheid struggles, and other people's movements. In the currents of his life run the rivers of the world: the ideological history of revolutionary thought and politics in our current epoch.

In this episode, we talk about Dr. Monteiro's family and early life, and try to understand the Great Migration and the cultural shift that it signified.
