Erta Ale volcano: lava lake overflows increase (16 Jan 2017)
Erta Ale volcano's active lava lake had a first major overflow episode on the morning of 16 January 2017, just shortly after one of our recent tour groups arrived there.
Participant Paul took a series of videos from this event. This one shows the western rim of the lava lake inundated by multiple overflows as magma supply rate apparently increased strongly during the day, feeding more and more lava flows spilling over the low rim of the lava lake's crater.
