Fear of Litigation Dictates Patient Care in Psychiatry

One of the moments that changed my career happened years ago in an inpatient treatment setting.

A patient asked me for a second opinion because he wanted to come off his mood stabilizer.

It was apparent to me that his psychosis was caused from his drug use and now that he's sober, I developed a very slow taper plan.

And the psychiatrist overseeing the case was upset with me. Not because he was a bad doctor. Not because he didn’t care.

Because he was afraid.
