"Is this what happiness feels like?" This question from a young client in an addictions treatment program sent the speaker on a journey of interrogating some of the basic truths of addiction and mental health. What is addiction? It turns out that it's neither choice nor disease, two common definitions in society, but a natural and logical response to our environments and the stress we encounter. Addiction is just a glitch in the operating system, embedded deep in our human nature. This talk explores a new way to look at addiction, opening the door to powerful healing opportunities....whether your drug of choice is heroin, alcohol or your smartphone.

Jeff Couillard is an experienced leader in the nonprofit, education and community sectors. His vision is to help people (and organizations) change for the better, and believes that real change is only possible when it starts with individuals. For the past decade he’s been leading a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, building a world class addictions treatment program for youth and families a mere 10km from Canmore (as the crow flies) in the Ghost forest. In his spare time he runs an old diesel truck on vegetable oil, experiments with building social enterprises, manages a diabetes diagnosis with running shoes and high-fat, ketogenic diet…and helps raise three small children.
