Nabi Tajima: The 117-Year-Old Woman Who Lived Through Three Centuries
Nabi Tajima (August 4, 1900 – April 21, 2018) was a Japanese supercentenarian who became the oldest validated person in the world at the time of her death. Living to the remarkable age of 117 years and 260 days, Tajima holds a significant place in longevity history as the last validated person born in 1900 and the last verified survivor born in the 19th century.
Born in Araki, Wan Village, on Kikaijima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, Nabi Tajima witnessed more than a century of extraordinary global change. From the final years of the Meiji era through two World Wars, rapid technological revolutions, and the modern digital age, her life spanned three different centuries. She remained in Kagoshima Prefecture throughout her life, later residing in Kikai on the same island where she was born.
Tajima became the oldest person in Japan on September 27, 2015, following the death of an anonymous Tokyo woman. On September 15, 2017, after the passing of Violet Brown of Jamaica, she officially became the world’s oldest living person. At that time, she was already 117 years old, a rare milestone achieved by only a handful of individuals in recorded history.
Her large and multi-generational family reflects a legacy that extended far beyond her extraordinary age. On her 117th birthday in 2017, she had nine children, 28 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, 64 great-great-grandchildren, and even 14 great-great-great-grandchildren. Her family described her as resilient and strong, qualities often associated with Japan’s remarkable number of supercentenarians.
Nabi Tajima passed away from natural causes on April 21, 2018, in a hospital in Kikaijima, where she had been hospitalized since January of that year. She is currently recognized as the second-oldest validated Japanese person ever, after Kane Tanaka, and remains the fifth-oldest validated person in world history, following Jeanne Calment, Kane Tanaka, Sarah Knauss, and Lucile Randon.
