The Cisco Kid: Buried Treasure (1952) | Duncan Renaldo | First Color TV Western | Full Episode
The Cisco Kid - Season 2, Episode 25: "Buried Treasure" (1952) - starring Duncan Renaldo as The Cisco Kid and Leo Carrillo as Pancho. Directed by Paul Landres. Written by J. Benton Cheney, based on the character created by O. Henry. Runtime: 30 minutes.
Jean Lafitte was a real man. He was a privateer and smuggler who operated in the Gulf of Mexico in the early 1800s. He helped Andrew Jackson defeat the British at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. He disappeared somewhere around 1823 and his treasure, if it existed, was never found.
In this episode of The Cisco Kid, his cabin boy - now an ancient old man - is still alive. And the treasure is still hidden. And an old crone and her sons have found the old man and intend to extract the information by whatever means necessary.
Cisco and Pancho arrive at exactly the right moment. They usually do.
This is the specific pleasure of The Cisco Kid at its best - taking a piece of genuine American history and building a thirty-minute adventure around the question of what might have happened next. Jean Lafitte is one of the most romanticized figures in American frontier legend. The Battle of New Orleans is one of the last great American victories. A cabin boy who survived into old age carrying a secret about buried pirate gold is the exact kind of setup that works perfectly in half an hour.
For Easter week on Switch International Westerns, this episode lands precisely right. Something hidden for decades being brought to light. A man from a forgotten past who has outlasted everyone who knew him. And Cisco - who always arrives when the people who have power are using it against people who don't - doing what he does.
The Cisco Kid remains the first television series ever filmed in color in history. That was 1950. What you are watching is, by any measure, a piece of television history. The fact that it is also simply a very entertaining 30 minutes about pirates and treasure is a bonus.
