Wendy Pearlman - "We Crossed A Bridge and It Trembled!"

Dr. Wendy Pearlman is an award winning scholar, Middle East expert, and Professor of Middle East Studies at Northwestern University. She earned a Ph.D. from Harvard, an MA from Georgetown University, and a BA from Brown University. Her research focuses on the comparative politics of the Middle East, social movements, political violence, refugees and migration, emotions and mobilization, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Ms. Pearlman speaks fluent Arabic and has spent more than 20 years studying and living in the Arab world.

Dr. Pearlman is the author of the book "We Crossed A Bridge and It Trembled." It chronicles the Syrian war, from its origins in peaceful protests to its present horror, solely through the words of ordinary people transformed by its unfolding. For the book, Dr. Pearlman interviewed more than 300 Syrian refugees across three continents and over the course of more than four years. Through the voices of children, parents, students, teachers, web designers, artists, playwrights, doctors, engineers and many others, we can better learn of the heart-wrenching toll of this tragic war.
