First time we framed exterior stairs this way was 24 years ago. We started using PWT Treated LVL for this application because LVL is "freakishly strong" (an engineer once told me), and PWT Treated LVL is unlike pressure treated wood commonly available. During the manufacturing of the LVL, every single layer is treated as the layers are built up and bonded making LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber).
