🌅 Mount Rushmore's RARE Easter Sunrise Celebration

Easter at Mount Rushmore?!?

This past Sunday (April 9, 2023) marked a major milestone for residents of Keystone, South Dakota. For the 75th time, local congregations have celebrated Easter Sunday at sunrise below Mount Rushmore.

On Easter Sunday in 1945 during the last year of World War II, a 7th and 8th grade Sunday school class initiated the Mount Rushmore Easter Sunrise service on the back side of the Monument.

The tradition continued and remains to this day, marking the 75th occasion (2019 was not held due to construction, then 2020-21 due to COVID-19).

Rain, snow, or shine - residents pack the amphitheater to see local churches conduct the service at 7 AM just as the sun is rising atop the stone faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abe Lincoln.

This was considered one of the better weather days at a balmy 34-degrees. Despite snowbanks occupying several seats (and a snowman on the side for added flair), the place was packed. A choir (dressed in layers) led the music, with several acknowledgements to those who contributed to the tradition.
