“GREEN GHOSTS” 3rd Force Recon Co Team Leader ( Eagle Eye) -Sgt Joseph H. Jackson

joined the United States Marine Corps in September 1964. After boot camp I volunteered for sea duty and was stationed with the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Independence. I did get to see the world and in May 1965 we were sent to Vietnam. My contribution to the war effort was in arming bombs. After our return to the states our detachment got several openings for Jump School at Fort Benning and I was able to get one. We then went to the Med for six months; upon our return I was due for a transfer so I volunteered for Vietnam. Instead of going through Staging Bn I went to Recon School at Camp Pentleton. When I arrived in-country in July 1967 I was sent to 3rd Force Recon at Dong Ha. I was assigned to 2-1 Spiceberry I and on my third patrol I took the team out as patrol Leader. I was an Assistant Patrol Leader of Offertory I with Billy Andress for several months. In November of 1967 1 got my own team and became Patrol Leader of Eagle Eye 6-1. After making Sgt I became the Platoon Sergeant. In May 1968 1 went to Khe Sanh Combat Base as Recon Rep. In June 1 ended my Recon Career as Platoon Commander for the 3id platoon playing grunt and guarding the Cam Lo Bridge with a platoon from Bn Recon. I have always been proud of having been a Marine and a 3id Force Recon member in Vietnam. One of the most difficult missions I participated in was a fast rope insert in the Hai Lang Forrest.
