Nuh Kabarino: From Devout Christian to Martyr of Da’wah
Nuh Kabarino was once a devout Christian from the Philippines. Never did he imagine that his life would take a dramatic turn when he began working in Saudi Arabia. There, he encountered Islam more closely. He started learning Arabic and gradually studied the Qur’an, its interpretation, and the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Within seven years, he managed to memorize the Qur’an and deeply embrace Islamic teachings.
Upon returning to his homeland in the Philippines, Nuh did not remain idle. He chose to become a da’i (Islamic preacher), inviting others to learn about Islam. He engaged in dialogues with Christian priests, held public intellectual debates, and spread the message of Islam with strong arguments and remarkable patience.
The impact was profound. Over the span of a few years, more than 70,000 Filipinos, originally Christians, embraced Islam through his da’wah. Nuh Kabarino’s name gained recognition—not only among Muslims but also among church leaders and even foreign officials.
It is said that the U.S. ambassador in Manila once mentioned Nuh in a public forum, accusing him of “reviving radical Islam in the Philippines.”
However, not everyone welcomed his growing influence. When debates and discussions were no longer effective in stopping his mission, more sinister efforts emerged. In 2016, while in sujud (prostration) during Asr prayer at a mosque in Manila, Nuh Kabarino was fatally shot. He died, in shaa Allah as a martyr, in a state of worship before his Lord.
His killer was never clearly identified. Some blamed American intelligence, others pointed to Iran, while some local media accused radical Christian groups in the Philippines. To this day, the case remains unsolved.
Nuh Kabarino is remembered as a passionate preacher who dedicated his life to spreading Islam**, right up to his final breath.
