Blondie’s Beatmaster Clem Burke Dies at 70

Clem Burke, the legendary drummer of Blondie, has passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with cancer, the band confirmed Monday.

“Clem was the heartbeat of Blondie,” the band said in a heartfelt statement, remembering him for his incredible talent, energy, and passion for music.

Burke began drumming at age 14 and joined Blondie in the 1970s after responding to an ad looking for a “freak energy” drummer. He quickly became known for his powerful and precise style, most famously showcased in the band’s 1979 hit “Dreaming.”

Blondie became one of the most successful bands of the New York rock scene, known for hits like “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” “The Tide Is High,” and “Rapture”—the first No. 1 song to feature rap.

In 2006, Burke and his bandmates were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after selling over 42 million records.

In recent years, Burke celebrated the band’s history with the release of the "Blondie: Against the Odds" box set, filled with rare recordings and demos.

The Rock Hall honored him as “a versatile and distinctive drummer” who brought both precision and punk rock energy to every song.
