Why live near a shoutengai in Japan?

A shoutengai (商店街) is a shopping street where you can find a variety of stores and restaurants. You'll usually find shoutengai around residential neighborhoods in Tokyo and in other cities around Japan, since these markets generally acted as local community gathering spots in history. These are very walkable (and sometimes bike-able) streets where you can pick up different home essentials, browse handmade goods, and even stop for a bite to eat in a locally owned cafe.

All the photos in the video were taken by me over the past couple of years here in Tokyo . Feel free to ask questions about the places. You'll see Kamata, Koenji, Togoshi Ginza, Kappabashi, Asakusa, Yanaka Ginza, and more that I probably forgot!
