the brutality of koalas

As we are well aware, the natural world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, the reality is there is a harsh brutality for survival. Even Australia's most iconic and placid animal can't escape this reality.
I per chance came across this encounter between a female with a joey and male. This time of year is mating season, so a lot more koalas are in the move, aswell as an increased bellowing from the male. This can lead to very loud and very violent encounters, especially when the female still has a joey, fending of a much larger male.
However during this violent encounter, I wasn't expecting, and neither the female or male, that the joey would get dislodged from its male and find itself in the males back. It became an a very tense moment as I watched the mother get distressed and panicked trying to bring back her joey, while the male kept moving further away.

Whilst this had a happy ending, the reality is that not all stories end the same. And some scenes become really hard to watch. To document wildlife, I believe it is my responsibility to also share this side of their lives. It may be extremely uncomfortable, and trust me, watching this unfurl in front of was hard to witness, but I believe it has to be shown, to fully understand how harsh survival can be for the natural world.
