How to Make Your Own Real Maple Syrup
#JimBaird #DIY #Homestead
The sap stopped running with a few days of cold weather but finally, we started getting sap again and we enjoyed some time outdoors for our first boil off. As I was setting up our wood stove, our friends showed up to hang out and check out the operation. Ryan helped me set up a tripod to hand a pot from. A stock pot that came with a bail arm we'd have to have ordered and costs 80$ but we found one at the store in town that was 30$ so I just added a pot hanger by drilling holes in the pot and feeding a wire clothes hanger through it. it doesn't look great but it works. After lighting a fire we let the sap steam for a very long time but it was very hard to bring to a boil. We ended up getting a little syrup but we decided we were going to have to swap out the stove for an open fire to speed up the process.
With some warm weather three days later we were out at it again and the open fire was boiling the syrup much faster. It was an awesome day for me Tori and Wesly out by the fire. Wesley slept the majority of the time. Tori and I hung out, added wood to the fire, and filtered sap to add to the pot whenever it boiled down.
With the sap really low and concentrated, we decided to finish off the boil indoors and ended up filling three mason jars with delicious syrup. Naturally, we celebrated with pancakes and our homemade Maple Syrup for dinner!!
