My Toughest approach of 2017! ILS to Minimums

Now that this video has been posted a few days, I feel it necessary to respond to the number of comments that have told me I busted minimums. Let me lead off by saying, if you have watched any of my videos from the last several years, you will know that I fly very conservatively. You won't find me blasting through thunderstorms or playing it loose with the regs. I've been flying for over 35 years without incident to include a full military career flying the F-16. And I intend to remain incident free.

Some people have mistakenly been led to believe that the "Minimums, minimums" call came right at minimums on this approach. It did not. The Collins Proline 21 allows you to set either baro min or radar min as your minimum altitude. That altitude will drive the minimum call. The selector allows you to set that altitude in 10' increments. The decision height for this approach was 1122. The baro min was set at 1130. On the approach at 42:50 time stamp, you can start to see some cloud break up and see the ground below. That camera is looking DOWN. As I transition to the front camera, you can see nothing but clouds. That camera is not looking down but actually looking up in line with the angle of attack of the aircraft. In that camera, at 42:56 you can start to see some ground below even though the camera is looking forward and slightly up. AT 43:06 I get the minimums call. At that same time I call the runway environment in sight. You can hear me say "There it is" referring to the runway. At 43:08 I click off the autopilot and land uneventfully.

The cameras because of their own limitations and the angle they are pointed do not pick up the runway environment until shortly after I called it out. Let me say with great emphasis. I would not proceed below minimums. You are simply to close to the ground to be doing anything that stupid. And, speaking of stupid, had I actually busted minimums, the last place you'd find a person who has spent the last 35 years devoting their life and passion to flying is posting the videos on social media.

Now, I know a few of you are "experts" out there. You list all your qualifications as you state your flawed opinion as to why I busted minimums. But, you must keep in mind that the camera does not pick up what the eye does. Before you go and throw your convictions on me that I went below minimums, go film your own approach to minimums and see if the camera picks it up at the same time as you do. But until you do that, please reserve your comments.

Minimums are minimums. Don't ever proceed below them without having the runway environment in sight. Never. It's really that simple.
