Building Arrows and Shooting Straight
When Dorn’s closed their doors a few years back, I wasn’t sure what to do when it came to buying arrows for the upcoming hunting season. I had watched plenty of videos on building arrows, but I wasn’t entirely sure if I was ready to make that leap. I didn’t have an arrow saw. I wasn’t sure on what specific arrow components or nocks to buy and install. Hell, I didn’t even know what vanes to get, let alone how to install them. I had my work cut out for me.
I did my research and found that Lancaster Archery Supply cuts custom arrows to length. They also have an option for all of the components to be installed as well as the proper nocks. My initial order was for six Easton Archery Bloodline 400-grain arrows - custom cut to 27 1/16”. I purchased a fletching jig, some arrow glue, arrow wraps, and two different colored vanes. I didn’t know it at the time, but one of the arrows I originally built would help me harvest my largest archery buck.
But enough about the nostalgia. Here is my process for building arrows for this upcoming season to prepare yourself for archery season success.
The Order
Place an order for your custom cut arrows. My preference is ordering from Lancaster Archery Supply. This season, I’ll be hunting with the Easton Archery Sonic 6.0 Match Grade arrows.
If you don’t own one, purchase a fletching jig. I have the Easton Archery EZ Fletch Tool - Small Diameter Multi-Kit. I’ve found this specific jig to be easy to use!
Select your vane colors. Always order two different colored vanes to help you when nocking an arrow in the woods. I typically have two white vanes and one orange vane on my arrows. I use the AAE Archery Hybrid vanes.
While you're at it, order some arrow cement or glue. Any kind of arrow adhesive will work.
The Assembly
Open your fletching jig and place your arrow into the center of it so it sits as if it was nocked to your bowstring.
Place your vanes in the appropriate vane holders. Take your glue and put a thin layer of it on each vane. Too much glue will cause your arrows to be too heavy and gunk up the jig.
Assemble the jig and wait anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute to ensure the glue has set.
Remove the arrow from the jig assembly.
Take your arrow glue and put a dot at the front and back of the vanes. This will help ensure the vanes won’t fly off when shooting.
I typically wait at least a day before shooting freshly built arrows, but you can shoot them as soon as the glue dries. One bonus step you can do when building your arrows is to place an arrow wrap on your bow. These are placed on the back end of the arrow - by the nock. Then, you can place your vanes on the arrow wrap. Some people like arrow wraps while others don’t. I fall under the pro arrow wrap camp.
