Back to School (Short Film)
This is my short film “Everything and Nothing” – a love story about the magic of all the minute details that make up life and the intricacies of finding something special from them. Picture Taika Waititi’s short film “Two Cars, One Night” set all in a classroom study break.
Logline: A boy unexpectedly meets a girl that bickers with him at first but whose dynamic slowly sow the seeds of young love.
Synopsis: A classroom full of young teenagers are undertaking a study session period. Chris sits next to Tom as they struggle together to solve a maths problem. But with no help from Tom, he turns to ask Rebecca from across the room. She too cannot find the answer until she checks with a girl Chris hasn’t noticed before who figures out the solution. Chris begins to interrogate Rebecca for the girl’s name, but she refuses. Eventually, the girl returns to her seat near Chris and the two begin to negotiate for the rights to sharing her name to Chris. They playfully banter back and forth until the girl throws a piece of paper to him revealing her name to be Amy. Both smile at each other before resuming their study.
Director’s Statement: “Everything and Nothing” aims to capture that idea of enjoying the small things in life because more often than not, it’s the small things that make up life. I wanted to create a story that portrayed these minute moments and little intricacies amongst the backdrop of finding a potential connection with someone else. On the surface, what we say and do might seem like trivial things in the moment but by looking deeper at these in hindsight, it’s usually these miniscule idiosyncrasies that makeup everything. This is a film that strives to show that.

What is a Short Film?
A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term.
The increasingly rare industry term "short subject" carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers with either a low budget or no budget at all. They are usually funded by film grants, nonprofit organizations, sponsor, or personal funds. Short films are generally used for industry experience and as a platform to showcase talent to secure funding for future projects from private investors, a production company, or film studios. They can also be released with feature films, and can also be included as bonus features on some home video releases.
