The Bagpiper Who Charged D-Day! This was the craziest loadout of WW2. Because may have heard of Mad Jack Churchill who opted for an english low bow, a broadsword and bagpipes, you may have also heard of Digby Tatham Warther who used an officer pistol and umbrella. But potentially topping them both was Bill Millin. He was just 21 years old during D-Day and was the personal piper to Simon Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat of the British 1 Special Service Brigade. See he landed onto Sword Beach on D-Day armed with no rifle, no bow or any other ranged weapon but simply with a set of bagpipes, and a small dagger called a Sgian-dubh. In fact more hilariously bagpipes were banned near combat areas but Lord Lovat said to Millin “Ah, but that’s the English War Office. You and I are both Scottish, and that doesn’t apply.” So on the day of D-day he landed on the beach as shown in this photo of him right here, and marched up and down playing the bagpipes whilst getting shot at with MG and rifle fire. Oh he was also the only man during the landing wearing a kilt, the same one his father wore in WW1. Somehow he survived the landing and the war. In fact Millin ended up talking to a captured German Sniper later on who told him the German’s intentionally didn’t shoot Millin because they thought he had gone mad. For this strange act of bravery Millin was eventually awarded a Legion of Honour for Gallantry by the French. He also later played the Bagpipes at Lord Lovat’s Funeral in 1995 and died at the age of 88 in 2003. D-DAY VET "I'm The ONLY ONE Left From My Unit"
