Wish | Nine Inch Nails | Gothik Serpent Cover

Way back in 2009, I saw Nine Inch Nails with my dad at Fort Canning Park. From the moment Trent Reznor stepped through a wall of stage smoke and launched into Somewhat Damaged, the next two hours were one of the most visceral musical experiences of my life.

At the end of the show, I asked my dad what he thought. The first thing he said was he thought it was gross that Trent took off his sweaty T-shirt and tossed it into the eager audience. The second thing he said was that Wish was his favorite song of the set (or as he described it, "that song towards the end of the show that sounded like a train"). That forever sealed this tune in my mind as one to remember when it came time for the next NIN cover.

Like most of NIN's songs, Wish combines propulsive but simple instrumental parts with extremely dense layers of samples, synthesizers, and distorted effects. The Gothik Serpent rendition seeks to combine the textural complexity of the studio version with the hard-hitting performance of the live version.
