Repertoire: Explore C.P.E. Bach's Amazing "Hamburg" Symphonies
The six symphonies (Wq. 182) that C.P.E. Bach wrote in Hamburg in 1773 for the Baron Gottfried van Swieten are brilliant, astonishing works. The Baron gave him complete freedom to write exactly as he pleased, and the result is a series of pieces unique in the 18th century for their imaginative daring and expressive intensity. Still relatively unfamiliar, they deserve an honored place in every collection of orchestral music of the classical era.
